About Wing Chun

Wing Chun (everlasting springtime) was devised by the Buddhist nun Ng Mei in the early 1700’s and is a system of kung fu aimed at realistic self defence.

Legend has it that she was a proficient fighter at other martial arts but wished to streamline her knowledge. She witnessed a fight between a snake and a stork and was impressed by how the stork simultaneously used its wings and feet to defend and attack; she adapted this to the human frame and formulated her fighting system. She befriended a young girl Yim Wing Chun who became her first student and so passed the system on. Wing Chun is a system that is continually evolving and improving.

Wing Chun teaches you in to accept what is happening around you, not to fight it, not to go to extremes (try to much, try to little) but to take what Buddhists call the middle path. Therefore if you are in a stressful scenario the mind will stay relaxed, you will see clearly, you react with situations as they happen (here and now), not pre-empting what might or what might not be, it just is...

Wing Chun utilises a few basic and logical principles:

  • Simplicity
  • Directness
  • Practicality
  • Economy of movement
  • Minimum use of strength

This makes the system easy and quick to learn and suitable for both men and women of any age and ability. The system strips away any wasteful energy consuming movements and utilises structure and body positioning to produce power; this enables anyone to learn how to overcome force.

The sessions will combine cardiovascular and muscular workouts along side personal safety techniques – this is as much about personal growth as it is about health, fitness and defence.

Benefits include

  • Self Defence
  • Focus
  • Awareness of situations
  • Self development
  • Improvement of body posture
  • Relaxation
  • Calmness of mind
  • Health and fitness

  • Self confidence

Ultimate excellence lies, not in winning every battle, but in defeating the enemy without even fighting’.
