A Brief Introduction to the Wing Chun System

Wing Chun utilises a few basic and logical principles:

  • Directness
  • Efficiency
  • Simplicity

This close quarter fighting system strips away any wasteful energy consuming movements and utilises structure and body positioning to produce power.

Wing Chun is a martial art system based on realistic self defence. It is designed for combat and is not a sport!

Centreline theory - Wing Chun utilises an imaginary line between yourself and your opponent (shortest distance between two points). The centreline is the most direct line to the target; intercepting, capturing and controlling this line will give the Wing Chun fighter good advantage over the attacker. Along this line are many vulnerable points to strike e.g. eyes, nose, throat, solar plexus, abdomen and groin.

Wing Chun also uses simultaneous attack and defence, making your attack also your defence and vice versa, making the system very quick to deploy it's weaponry and deal with the problem.

Force Generation - force equals mass x acceleration, so by having a good stance and structure, staying relaxed and focusing your strike, using your body mass and synchronising the joints simultaneously (pivoting, stepping etc.), you will maximise acceleration thus allowing you to be able to strike hard, no matter what your size or gender.

Overcoming force is also achieved by good stance and structure to absorb, redirect and deflect oncoming force so that you use the stance to anchor yourself to the floor or pivot / step.

Wing Chun uses the concept of Loi Lau Hoi Sung, Lat Sau Jik Chung which roughly translates to "receive what comes in, follow what goes out, strike when empty". Therefore a constant forward energy is applied (mind rather than physical); when your opponent strikes, you strike, if contact is made the oncoming force is absorbed and redirected, if your opponent's structure collapses you follow through and strike, if no contact is made you strike through the void to the attacker.

Forms

Forms are an integral part of the system, which focus on training a set of basic movements that can be applied to a variety of situations.

There are 4 empty hand forms : Siu Nim Tau (young idea)
Cham Kiu (crossing the bridge)
Bil Ji (Thrusting fingers)

Mook jong (wooden dummy)

Weapon forms : Luk Dim Boon Gwan (Long Pole)
Baat Jam Do (Butterfly Knives)

Wing Chun (everlasting springtime) was devised by the Buddhist Nun Ng Mei in the early 1700's and is a system of kung fu suitable for male, female, young and old

Wing Chun is a system that is continually evolving and improving.

Wing Chun teaches you in to accept what is happening around you, not to fight it, not to go to extremes (try to much, try to little) but to take what Buddhists call the middle path. Therefore if you are in a stressful scenario the mind will stay relaxed, you will see clearly,(still mind, aggressive body) you react with situations as they happen (here and now), not pre-empting what might or what might not be, it just is...

Concepts Wing Chun sessions are taught in a relaxed environment as either group sessions or private tuition depending on your preference. The sessions are aimed at developing yourself through the use of techniques and concepts based on Wing Chun; they are varied and provide a practical and realistic approach to personal safety and fitness. The sessions will combine cardiovascular and muscular workouts along side personal safety techniques - this is as much about personal growth as it is about health, fitness and defence.
